P5 and P6 English

Does your child…

  • Lose precious marks to inaccurately phrased answers in open-ended comprehension section?
  • Forget the meanings of the words when he read his comprehension text?
  • Struggle to understand what the comprehension text is saying?
  • Has difficulty in filling in the right words in comprehension close passages?
  • Complain of not being able to think of any story ideas for his composition?

Are you at a complete loss of what to do and wondering why such a thing is happening?

Well… You are not alone…

Let us assure you that this a very common problem parents face. After speaking with countless parents, 9 out of 10 parents share with us the same challenge (more so after the new PSLE English Syllabus was rolled out in 2010).

Here’s the thing. The problem is not that your child doesn’t have the ability (Because every child has tremendous potential within them…) …It is because they have been taught the WRONG way!

You see, the method to learn and score well for English exams is different from to method to score for Maths and Science. The MISTAKE many tuitions centres and tutors out there are making is that they are using “one fit all” approach where they drill students with tons of exercises the same way they did for Maths or Science.

English is a language, and language is for communication, unlike Math and Science. Consistent exercises alone won’t help your child to score the A or A*. To score an A or A* in English, your child will need to master four essential language skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) which drilling ALONE does not help.

Each of these language skills is not independent of one another. They support each other. For example, the more a child reads, the more content he will be able to speak and write about. However, if he is unable to pronounce the words or does not know how to organize his thoughts and opinions, what he talks about may not make coherent and logical sense.

That is why drilling is NOT a one-size-fits-all solution to get the A or A*.

“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”

– Maimonides, a 12th Century Jewish philosopher

Drilling and practices alone is just like giving the child the fish.

Mastering the fundamental skill sets is like knowing how to fish. Your child will not only ace their primary school English examinations, but he will also find easing into Secondary English a breeze. Most importantly, your child will become a confident and effective communicator in the 21st century.

After teaching for more than a decade (and counting) in schools and helping countless students improve in English, we have found that students don’t do well NOT because they are lazy or naturally not good in it. It is usually due to a lack of foundational language skills to help them enjoy and appreciate the language and do well in English examinations and beyond.

Integrated English Learning Framework

This framework is based on our years of experience working with over 1,000 students in some of the top schools in Singapore. It adopts a Balanced Literacy instructional approach (California Department of Education, 1996; Honig 1996) that aims to assist students in mastering the skills necessary for communication with an emphasis in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing.

We achieve this by creating a language and literature rich learning environment with the use of authentic texts in our lessons to teach comprehension skills, writing skills and oral skills. Children are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning through independent and shared exercises.

Unlike other English teaching approaches that focus on English exam skills and constant drilling, at Knowledge Trail, we make English language becomes more relevant and meaningful to students.
